To Vouch: assert or confirm as a result of one’s own experience that something is true or accurately so described:
What if the next time you searched for a date or a partner in a relationship you asked for a list of references? Who can vouch for your behaviour in your past relationships?
After all you won’t get that new job if you don’t provide your future employer with a list of individuals who can speak on your work habits and ability to perform on the job. Today most people won’t even see a movie without reading a review or at least until they get feedback from friends and family.
Relationships are like full-time jobs and you should be able to prove your qualifications to your potential mate. True, relationships are not like the movies but if we will read a review before spending our down time watching a movie, imagine what kind of detailed resume we need before investing many months or years into a relationship.
Luckily, I am not proposing anyone construct a ten-page resume detailing your relationship experiences. All you need is “vouchees” – grab a couple of ex’s, your parents, your friends. They know much about your relationships because they spend/spent so much time with you. They can see things about you that you may not be able to. On the other hand, you can only expect your vouchees to share their opinion about your role in a relationship and anyone receiving a voucher should note that this an opinion is not an absolute fact.
So if you are getting a voucher from your potential new boyfriend’s ex girlfriend, understand that this is only one’s personal opinion and do not base your conclusion on this. Speak to other people first before doing anything. A voucher is always in addition to speaking with your potential mate and hearing how they describe their role in relationships. People change and people grow so do not rule a person out just because their last relationship went sour. If their last ten went sour then that’s another story…People also lie, I mean stretch the truth, about their relationship experiences and readiness for a new one, so this is where a voucher becomes extremely important.
