This Woman is Breaking the Silence Surrounding Child Abuse

Sherika Powell is the author of “A Woman Unchained”

Freedom from past shame, fear, and guilt is what “A Woman Unchained” is al about.  For Sherika Powell, it means sharing her story as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, taking back her power and finding her voice in the process. It meant becoming truly unchained from the shackles that held her captive as a victim for so many years. She is finally leading a life full of love, hope and success. Sherika Powell is also the host of ‘Women on the Rise,” an inspirational television show on RogersTV. You can pre-order the book HERE.

In an exclusive interview, I find out what inspired Sherika to speak out against child abuse.

Q: What inspired you to write this book?

A: Well, initially I did not want to write the book. I was toying with the idea of sharing my story for quite along time but writing a book of this nature was extremely scary as I would be sharing my deepest emotions and the trauma that I experienced with the world. Despite my fears, with Gods strength, I took that pad and paper and one sentence at a time I began to write. The journey of writing my story was painful at times as I had to relive the trauma all over again. But I decided to continue for all those women out there that are silenced by past abuse and ashamed. I decided to get brave, persevere and be unashamed.

Q: What advice do you have for others, who have experienced abuse?

A: My advice is to not be ashamed and not to be silent! Most of us were told to be silent and keep our abusers a secret. We were told that is was our fault why the abuse happened, so the shame was passed on to us. We are not be ashamed and not to be silenced! What happens in darkness must come to light. I support and encourage survivors to hold their head up high, stand tall and know that you have worth. If there is a survivor out there that is ready to break the silence and be unashamed, please tell someone that you trust and is supportive, who can help you. I am a strong advocate for counselling and therapy, so my advise is to seek professional help to start your path to healing.

Q: How do you feel after writing this book?

A: After writing this book, I feel like I have climbed a mountain and conquered it! With God on my side, through this journey I have learned so much about myself! I have learned that I can push through and persevere through difficult tasks. I have learned that I really enjoy writing, and that it is my artistic expression and I cant wait to start my next book :). I have learned that I am not a quitter and I have what it takes to dig deep, trust in God’s plan and go for it. I have learned what it means to have faith, you know its one thing to say “have faith” but when you have to put it into practice, it’s a whole other ball game. Above all, I feel blessed and so thankful to God that I leaned on him even when I couldn’t see the out come. I wondered before if this was all worth it but now I know for certain it was!
